Growing with Salient Energy—Tackling Big Problems, Fast

Port Labs member Salient Energy is a four-year old multinational startup proving zinc-ion battery technology for the home energy storage market.

Salient has been developing zinc-ion battery technology and systems, which perform similarly to industry-standard lithium-ion alternatives. Compared to lithium-ion, zinc-ion is safer, cheaper, and more environmentally sustainable. It also enables Salient to build their product using a North America-based supply chain—from raw material to finished product. Salient aims to lead the energy storage industry with best-in-class cost, safety, and performance.

In 2021, Salient joined Port Labs after receiving a $1.5M grant from CA Energy commission. This grant enabled them to build their US team and develop their full-scale residential energy storage system.  Over the last year-and-a-half, they've grown their Oakland team from one person to a team of nine.

Last month, Salient expanded from our original location into our new 2044 Franklin Street HQ, adding a new test lab to their footprint. This new space allows the team to accelerate their test / validation cycles and move from testing components to testing their full power pack.

Salient is tackling big problems, and constantly adapting to new challenges along the way. Their impressive ability to move quickly gives them the edge they need to win in a fast-moving sector. We're thrilled to have them in the Port Labs community.

Working with Port Labs has enabled us to meet our challenges by allowing us to expand and increase our capabilities quickly. This is what we need as a startup. We’re excited to be here, and to see a community of great companies forming around us.

We’re excited to be able to say ‘yes’ when the Salient team asks. They’re a great example of a driven company solving a big problem, and we want to do everything we can to ensure they meet their goals.
